A Hard Rains Gonna Fall
It is the thickest part of the forest that Dante describes as dark: Midway upon the journey of our life I found myself within a forest dark, For the straightforward pathway had been lost. Dante feels lost and terrified in the dark forest.
Dylan also feels lost and appalled when he sees forests that are being destroyed. But if men kill Nature, they kill themselves.viajarsim.com/wp-includes/como/63-localizador-de.php
Bob Dylan - A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall lyrics | LyricsFreak
They are turned into bleeding trees. The middle of the forest in this song corresponds to the greenwood we saw in Lord Randal, that is, where there is the entrance to the Otherworld, the residing place of the dead. However, the greenwood the son visits, has already been destroyed; it is sad, the fairies and elves that protected it have been defeated. Lord Randal was punished when he did not respect the sacred wood and Dylan suggests that the same thing is going to happen to us.
We know who committed the crime: the men with their bleeding hammers who destroy the forests to make money.

They were born with wild wolves around them and now they are hidden in their rooms, the rooms of power, and make decisions for everybody. Who destroys Nature does not know what love is because God in him is dead or better He was never born. Yet we can still decide if we want to be accomplices to the crime or do something to fight against them. In the continuation of the song, the son is in front of a dozen dead oceans. Once again, it is impossible to be in front of a dozen dead oceans. In a dead ocean, there is a white ladder.
In his dream, Jacob sees himself climbing to Heaven to meet God by means of a white ladder held by angels. The white ladder symbolises the steps towards Heaven, spirituality, a path of light, which should lead to God. However, that ladder is invisible; it is in a dead ocean where life, even the one after death, has ceased to exist.
We have thrown the ladder into a dead ocean and by doing so we have broken the bonds with Nature and God. We have forgotten that everything is divine, that we are divine.

As a result, we can communicate neither with ourselves nor with God-Nature anymore. Finally he has been ten thousand miles in the mouth of a graveyard where he saw ten thousand talkers one each mile whose tongues were all broken. The mouth of the graveyard is the entrance to the world of the dead, but their greenwood has been destroyed. The ones he meets are the spirits of the dead who are supposed to be the go-between men and God. However they have nothing to say as they, as well as God, refuse to communicate with men who destroy beauty. The future generation is not better: instead of learning from history about the atrocities of the wars, they are marching to the graveyard with guns and sharp swords in their hands.
No wonder then if a hard rain is going to fall upon these evil men. They do not deserve to live.
The setting of the third stanza represents the prelude to the new great flood that is going to fall and announce a sort of Final Judgement. The sound of what the son heard is a sound of despair, of fear, of scorn. Egoism has brought indifference and scorn: if someone starves, people laugh, if a poet or a clown offers his heart and his voice to give vent to his feelings, he is bound to remain alone, a voice in a desert dried up by indifference.

Poetry does not move feelings anymore. The albatross of the famous poem by Coleridge, as well as Jesus, is killed everyday along with beauty and the sense of divine. The fourth stanza starts with just about the same words you can read in the second one of the Scottish version of Lord Randal. The son here meets a young child who has forgotten what fun is like: his pony is dead; the wild wolves have killed joy and left him despair and frustration. He will grow up and walk a black dog, a symbol of death.
The woman he meets is disillusioned; there is no love to give to those men who have been destroying the earth and so she is burning her body out of protest and out of rage not to bear children anymore. Among images of despair the only sign of hope is represented by the girl who gives him a rainbow is there a chance that the hard rain may stop? The rainbow is also a symbol of peace.
Here again there is a reference to the Bible. At the end of the flood, a white dove came carrying a twig of olive in its beak while in the background there was a huge rainbow. This allegory suggests that peace is possible only if we find the sparkle of religiousness inside ourselves. If we meet it we find love and with it the chance to overcome egoism and wars. With his rainbow, the son could also give hope to the man wounded in love and the one wounded with hatred. In the last stanza, Bob Dylan turns himself into a preacher who reminds us of the Ancient Mariner.
He will go where there is apparently no more hope black is the colour, none is the number , but he will never give up in trying to wake up the collective consciousness, as the Ancient Mariner did, by talking to people. Only in this way the mist will dissolve, the path to the divine will be clear for everyone and the seventh highway will be crowded with loving people. He entrusts a song for his last hope, because singing is like a prayer that allows us to get into our own inner temple.
What is there in the song that he will know before he starts sinking? There is a regenerating silence and vacuum, peace that finds room only if you empty your mind from your prejudices and let it vibrate intimately with Nature, where intimacy meets immensity. It is the song of the soul that needs no words His song has the function of healing humanity as Dante had already understood many centuries before when he wrote about music as the healer of the soul. But for Dylan the whole humanity is sick and the cure is his song, if men are ready and willing to listen to it.
Only through a collective rebirth the seventh road can be seen by everybody. A road where religiousness will overcome all the dangerous and biased theories of religions that lead men to paranoia and fanaticism, due to the assumption that they only have the truth. Dylan seems to suggests that we do not need a particular god to achieve the goal of walking that road. We only have to cultivate the religiousness that everybody already possesses. Love and respect for Nature is the first step to the most intimate knowledge of ourselves that leads to the seventh road. By walking it, the light will become brighter and brighter and with it our awareness that we are part and not masters of Nature.
