His decision to write another installment of ''Bridges'' has been long in coming. He says it was inspired by frequent mail and queries from fans who wanted to learn more about what happened to Kincaid and Johnson in the years between kitchen counter surrender and death.
Although it develops its own plots and introduces other Kincaid love interests, Mr. Waller views this second book as a companion piece to the first. But ''Country Road'' did not come as easily as ''Bridges,'' which Mr. Waller famously wrote in 11 days.

It was a magical experience,'' he said. With the guidance of Jean Hardy, John's wife, who also works at the company, he substantially reworked the book. In the end, the joke may be on New York's publishing elite and the literary critics who guard its gates so viciously. At first Hardy was to print only 25, copies of ''Roads,'' self-consciously copying the build-slowly pattern that hoisted ''Bridges,'' but the book-buyer response at the wholesale level has been so large that the first printing is now about ,, already positioning the book for best-seller territory.
